Infant Mortality

For a printable version, click here.

Infant deaths are deaths occurring to individuals less than one year of age. The infant death rate is the number of resident infant deaths divided by total resident live births x 1,000.

After a period of decline, the three-year average infant mortality rate during 2003–2005 increased from 7.3 to 7.5 infant deaths per 1,000 live births but still remained below the state of Michigan's rate (8.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births). Blacks continue to have a higher infant mortality rate than whites, but the disparity between the two races is decreasing (12.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births versus 5.8 from 2003–05). Benton Harbor City had the highest three-year moving average infant mortality rate of 10.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births from 2003–05.
