The age-adjusted three-year moving average diabetes mortality rate in Berrien County increased by 6.8% from 2000–02 to 2001–03 and by 10.0% from 2001–03 to 2003–05. According to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), 65.2% of residents are either overweight or obese, therefore, this increasing trend for diabetes-related deaths will likely continue. Approximately 161 people died in a given year from diabetes from 1989 to 2004. The crude diabetes mortality rate is slightly higher for males and African Americans in Berrien Country.
